PRESS RELEASE

25 February 2009

The entire Church should join Archbishops in prayer, says Love Zim coalition

The Love Zim campaign has wholeheartedly welcomed the appeal for Zimbabwe by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York urging for donations, prayer and fasting.   Love Zim calls on the entire Christian Church in the UK to join in prayer, with the Anglican Communion, for Zimbabwe.

Qobo Mayisa, General Secretary of the Council of Zimbabwean Christian Leaders in the UK, a lead partner in Love Zim, said: "“We thank the Archbishops for their visionary leadership on the issue of Zimbabwe. Love Zim is calling on the entire British church to join the Anglicans in solidarity with the Archbishops’ call.

“Zimbabwe is embarking on a journey towards national recovery and reconstruction amid economic chaos, hunger, a cholera outbreak and continuing human rights violations. Prayer can make the difference in what appears to be an impossible situation. The church and people of the UK can help the reconstruction efforts by committing themselves to prayer and then allowing God to lead them in practical action for Zimbabwe.”

Love Zim was launched on the 14th February, when Zimbabwean Christians and Love Zim supporters joined human rights campaigners in a Valentine’s Day vigil outside Zimbabwe’s embassy. The London vigil came three days after Zimbabwean opposition leader Morgan Tsvangarai was sworn in as prime minister of a unity government, sharing power with President Robert Mugabe.

Christian leaders from the Love Zim coalition, representing among others, Evangelical Alliance, Tearfund, Council of Zimbabwean Christian leaders in the UK and Newfrontiers, signed and delivered a letter to the new unity government challenging Mugabe to redeem his name by loving the Zimbabwean people, and challenging Tsvangarai to take the opportunity to provide leadership at this crucial time. The full text of the letter is available on http://www.eauk.org/media/activists-send-valentines-day-letter-to-mugabe-and-tsvangirai.cfm

Psalm 147

1. Praise the LORD.
How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!

2. The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the exiles of Israel.

3. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

4. He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name.

5. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.

6. The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground.
